Thank you for your interest in artificial insemination at Shasta View Genetics, LLC. We are excited to introduce you to our new portable two-stall breeding barn. Large herd customers will now have access, allowing ranchers to work more efficiently and reduce overall cow stress during AI. Below is some information to help you plan for your next breeding project.
Artificial Insemination (AI) offers a selection of bulls with known genetic potential, as determined by the measurement of estimated breeding values for traits and phenotype. When heat detection and nutrition are appropriately managed, and semen quality is adequate, satisfactory results are obtained.
Estrus Synchronization Program Planning
Successful artificial insemination requires the preparation of the herd, such as a synchronization protocol. SVG has the knowledge and experience to match the best synchronization program for your unique A.I. project. Whether your goal is maximize conception rate or minimize labor and expense, we can suggest the best protocol for you.
We provide specific directions to each client, outlining each task that needs to be completed along with the proper dates and times to perform them in order for the project to be successful.
On average, this preparation requires three trips through the chute for both heifers and cows. However, this may vary depending on the synchronization protocol used for your specific breeding project. The first two trips through the chute are for preparatory treatments and may be performed by SVG or the owner, depending on preference. The final trip through the chute is for artificial insemination.
We realize that at times the amount of labor required to complete a synchronization and breeding project can seem overwhelming. If you do not have the time or labor resources please let us know and we will help you complete the job.
Sire Selection
SVG would gladly visit your herd and objectively evaluate its utility as well as learn more about your marketing plan, feed resources and management situation. We can then help you select a bull that will keep your cow herd on track, while giving you a more valuable calf to market.
FAQ
- What would be my average expected conception rate?
You can expect a conception rate of 50%-70% with single-timed insemination, similar to conception rates with a bull over a single cycle. In many herds, a clean-up bull is still used to breed any remaining open cows within the following two cycles, resulting in an overall conception goal of 95%. Please keep in mind nutrition, general herd health, stress, heat detection, and semen quality are all factors that can affect conception rate.
